Little Brother, Loyal - Big Brother, Friend

A cinematic storytelling campaign exploring the history, resilience, cultural legacy, and evolving identity of San Francisco’s Chinatown — one of the oldest and most historically significant Chinese communities in the United States.

Created as part of the larger Love Letters to San Francisco initiative, the project blends documentary filmmaking, portraiture, oral history, and community-centered storytelling to preserve the voices and lived experiences of the neighborhood’s residents, business owners, artists, and culture keepers. The campaign examines themes of migration, belonging, intergenerational memory, cultural preservation, and the emotional relationship between people and place.

Beyond documenting the neighborhood itself, the project was designed to help shift narratives around Chinatown from one of nostalgia or tourism into one centered on living culture, resilience, and future possibility. Through film screenings, community activations, and collaborative storytelling, the campaign aims to deepen public understanding while supporting visibility, pride, and cultural continuity within the community.

As Creative Director and filmmaker, Molly helped shape the project from concept through execution — leading narrative development, visual storytelling, interview direction, production, and community collaboration. Her role focused on building a cinematic and emotionally grounded visual language that honored both the intimacy and historical weight of the neighborhood while creating work that felt immersive, human, and deeply place-based.
